Debating

Debating is a team activity where students are challenged to put together and engage with logical arguments. It is a great way to improve general knowledge, public speaking skills, and the ability to be persuasive. It complements many of the skills learned in school.

At the very least, debate helps learners to see the power of deploying rational, reasoned arguments and compelling evidence in action. ... Increasing learners' confidence, poise, and self-esteem. Providing an engaging, active, learner-centered activity. Improving rigorous higher-order and critical thinking skills.

Gold Coast Debating is a high level three-on-three style debating competition, which aims to provide its participants with a beneficial extension to their mainstream curriculum studies.

This is achieved through the development of skills in communication, public speaking, confidence, teamwork and logical argument; as well as engagement with pressing social and political issues.

The competition invites schools from across the state, catholic and independent sectors, embracing the breadth of students that the Gold Coast has to offer.

With four preliminary rounds and four finals rounds in each division each year, the season spans from March to August, and thus students commit a large portion of their school year to preparation, training and debate.

LORDS is dedicated to coaching our debating teams to the highest standard.

In 2021 our Year 10 debating team won their Grand Final at Bond University for the Gold Coast Schools Debating Competition. This is a really outstanding achievement.

Not only that, LORDS received the ‘Most Successful School’ Award for the competition across over 125 teams from around the Gold Coast. Our Year 11 team also made the Semi-Finals.
