The LORDS Way: I can be Curious

Curiosity is one of the great gifts God has given us. It opens our eyes to wonder, helps us ask questions that matter, and draws us into a deeper understanding of the world and the people around us. At LORDS, when we say “I can be curious”, we are not just thinking about exploring ideas in the classroom; we are also thinking about how curiosity helps us to grow in relationships, service, and faith.

James 1:19 reminds us-

“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.”

Thank you for the gift of curiosity, the spark that helps us wonder, learn, and grow. Teach us to be curious in ways that honour others, to listen well, and to hold their stories with care. Help us to follow Jesus’ example of presence and compassion in all we do.

This week we gathered as a community to officially open our new Junior School buildings and playground. It was a wonderful celebration of growth, learning, and how God continues to bless our community.

We welcomed several special guests who joined us for the occasion, including First Assistant Bishop Rev. Ben Hentschke (LCAQD), Tanya Crooks (Executive Director of Lutheran Education Queensland), members of our LORDS Council past and present, Alberton Lutheran Parish members, and Mr Michael Crandon MP. Their presence was a reminder of the many hands and hearts that continue to support our LORDS community.

We give special thanks to the Block Grant Authority and the Lutheran Laypeople’s League (LLL) for their generous support, which helped make this project possible. These new learning spaces and play areas will enrich the lives of our students for many years to come, providing opportunities for creativity, imagination, play, and relationship-building.

A highlight of the day was the beautiful singing of our Junior School Choir, who helped set the tone of celebration and joy. We also thank our Year 12 Hospitality students for their wonderful service at our morning tea.

We give thanks to God for the blessings of this place and look forward to seeing our young people learn, play, and grow in these new spaces.

One of the special features of life at LORDS is our Buddy Program. From the very first days of school, our younger students are paired with older students who walk alongside them in friendship, encouragement, and care.

Buddy programs create opportunities for cross-year level relationships that enrich the whole school community. Younger students gain confidence knowing they have an older friend to look out for them, while older students develop leadership, empathy, and responsibility as they model the LORDS Way. These relationships build a sense of belonging that stretches across year levels and helps shape the warm and inclusive culture we value at LORDS.

It is often in the small moments of reading together, sharing a game, or simply checking in with a smile that these connections grow. For many students, their buddy relationship becomes one of their fondest memories of school.

We celebrate the gift of buddies at LORDS because they remind us that learning and growing happen best in community, where each person is valued, supported, and encouraged.

Wow! We appreciate and love how hard our school communities work, with hearts of compassion, to facilitate events in schools that are engaging, build awareness, and support fundraising. Some big events, and some small – every one of these contributions makes a difference.

Scholarship and Bursary Applications for 2026

Please note the final application date for 2026 bursaries is Friday, September 19, 2025.

Academic Scholarships have closed for 2026, with the next testing date for 2027 applications to be held on Saturday, March 7, 2026 (applications close towards the end of February 2026).

LORDS is already planning for staffing, resources and Year level structures for 2026.

If you plan to enrol a sibling or have family or friends looking for a place at LORDS in 2026, please submit an application as soon as possible. Our application process can be accessed via this link ENROL HERE.

If you know your child will not be attending LORDS in 2026, it would be of assistance if you could please notify our Registrar Leisa Martin in writing as soon as possible and with consideration of the enrolment contractual obligations of providing at least one term’s notice in writing. Should a term’s notice not be received, a term’s fees will be charged in lieu of notice.

This means for those students not returning in 2026, written notice should be received via email or letter no later than September 19, 2025.

Our Year 8 students have experienced an unforgettable camp experience at Kindilan, where they embraced adventure, teamwork, and the great outdoors.

Across the days, students challenged themselves with a variety of activities, including kayaking, archery, and the zipline—each one encouraging courage, resilience, and trust in themselves and others. Evenings were a highlight too, with students gathering around the campfire to share stories, laughter, and plenty of marshmallows.

Camp Kindilan provided the perfect backdrop for students to step outside their comfort zones, build deeper friendships, and strengthen their sense of independence. Teachers were impressed not only by the way students gave every activity their best effort but also by the encouragement and support they showed one another.

The Year 8 camp was more than just a time of fun—it was an opportunity to learn about leadership, perseverance, and the importance of community. A big thank you to the staff and leaders who guided our students through such a memorable experience.

It was a week full of fun, discovery, and excitement as our students celebrated the magic of science in action! 

In preparation for our final event of the year, Year 12 Hospitality students had the opportunity to dine at Mecca Bah Hope Island.

This is such a valuable learning experience for students. We ask them to be brave and taste foods they haven’t tried before, we encourage their curiosity by asking how we offer an experience like this at our event, and we encourage them to be critical thinkers by asking what worked and what adjustments they might make.

The environment, food, and service are all valuable experiences for students to reflect on as we prepare to deliver our parent dinner in November. We look forward to students showcasing all they have learned in the Hospitality kitchen during their time at LORDS. 

Our LORDS students spent time with the incredible Rosies - Friends On The Street team last week, serving and supporting those in need. It was a joy to be out in the community, sharing conversations, kindness, and connection with Rosie’s patrons.

We are incredibly proud of our students for demonstrating compassion and care – embodying what it means to inspire great humans.

Our Year 11 General English students had the privilege of welcoming parent Krish Ravipati for an engaging and insightful talk on Indian culture.

From traditions to values and everyday life, Krish shared stories and perspectives that deepened our students’ understanding of one of the world’s most vibrant and diverse cultures.
This was the perfect introduction to our next unit, which focuses on the novel Behind the Beautiful Forevers — giving students valuable cultural context before diving into the text.

A big thank you to Krish for taking the time to share his knowledge, experiences, and passion – enriching not only our curriculum but also our appreciation for the beauty of cultural diversity.

Last week at LORDS, we were meeting with parents and young people to work on their SET Plans – an important part of mapping out the next step after school.

We remind our students that this is a next step, not a forever step. Plans can grow and change as they do. 
At LORDS, we take a personalised approach, recognising each student’s unique gifts, passions, and goals. Together, we explore options, build confidence, and open doors to future pathways.
It’s all part of preparing our young people to take their next step with courage, curiosity, and purpose.

Future engineers in action!
Recently, our Engineering students headed to Griffith University for the ‘Big Day In’ – a powerhouse event packed with innovation, inspiration, and industry expertise.

They heard from incredible speakers, including Cran Middlecoat (Aviation), Tim Kitchen (Adobe), and representatives from the Australian National Intelligence (ASD), each sharing their real-world experience, career journeys, and the skills needed to succeed in the ever-evolving world of technology and engineering.

Beyond the inspiring talks, students had the chance to network with industry professionals, ask questions, and make valuable connections that could shape their future careers.

Opportunities like this give our students the chance to step outside the classroom, engage with leaders at the forefront of their fields, and see firsthand where their passion for engineering could take them.

Recently, in Science, our Year 10 and 11 Senior Chemistry students competed in the International Chemistry Competition.

This is a one-hour examination set by students across the globe. We are looking forward to seeing how they have done

Also, some very brave Year 11 students have taken on the challenge of competing in the gruelling Senior Science Olympiad in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. They have sat a two-hour problem-solving examination in which they are competing against the top 1 percent of students in Australia.

The program allows schools to test students' abilities against the national and international cohort. It allows students to build their skills, experience, knowledge, and connections.

While only a select few will go on to attend Olympiad Summer School and international teams, participation in the Exam is a prestigious and valuable experience for schools and students alike

We are very proud of them for bravely taking on this challenge. Results will be released in October of this year.

During the recent school holidays, Year 10 students Millie C and Lincoln G attended the Junior Physics Odyssey at the University of Queensland.

This is a unique opportunity in which students do a deep dive into the world of Physics.

Millie was kind enough to share her experience:

"I am emailing you with regards to my time at this year's Junior Physics Odyssey Camp held at UQ St. Lucia.
In short, the event was amazing, educational, and entertaining. The tutors at JPHO are excellent in providing fun activities about Physics while simultaneously integrating invaluable knowledge on Science, especially with the motions of law, and how UQ regularly hosts lectures and exams for students.

I wholeheartedly hope that more students who are as curious as I am, in the fields of physics and science, consider the possibility of attending the Junior Physics Odyssey Camp.
They can gain useful knowledge on topics that may interest them, as well as provide new connections with other students who share similar passions and an equal ambition for education."

Congratulations to Felicity, William, Vincent, and Blake who proudly represented LORDS in the Years 3–6 Interschool Spelling Bee on 20th August.

Competing against students from nine other Gold Coast schools at Saint Stephen’s College, they demonstrated wonderful bravery, resilience, and courage as they tackled some very challenging words in front of an audience. 

A special congratulations goes to Felicity, who placed equal third in Year 3, and to Vincent, who achieved third place overall in Year 5. 

Science Week in the Junior School was an exciting celebration of the theme ‘Decoding the Universe’. Classes shared daily activities, devotions, online incursions, and hands-on lunchtime experiments designed to spark curiosity and wonder.

Our students also participated in STEM learning experiences that were an integral part of science week. We welcomed an incursion from the ‘Street Science’ company, which explored the theme of ‘Into the Unknown’, demonstrating how unseen forces shape our world. Throughout the week, they also engaged in daily STEM-based activities to explore certain aspects of physical, chemical, and computer sciences, such as programming VR’s, flying drones, partaking in experiments, launching rockets, and much more.

It was a week filled with discovery, creativity, and fun for all!

All students worked so hard to prepare their speeches and answer questions with confidence. A special congratulations to Senne and Sarah, who even wrote their speeches entirely in Japanese script – what an incredible achievement!

On the final day of fixtures in the VETO Futsal League, LORDS once again proved they are right up there with the best.

✨ The Under 12 Boys came into the day knowing they had to win all three matches to secure a place in Championship Day – and they delivered in style. Playing some outstanding futsal, they won all three games, finishing the round tied for 1st place and going through the season undefeated across nine matches.

✨ The Under 12 Girls also rose to the challenge. They needed to win at least two games to make Finals Day, and they did just that – winning their first two matches before securing a draw in the last to confirm their spot in the Shield Finals in October. This team has shown remarkable growth and, under expert coaching, played some terrific futsal.

✨ The Under 16 Boys faced an uphill battle after early-season results left them needing to win all remaining games to reach the finals. While they didn’t quite get there, winning two matches, they produced one of the day’s highlights with a massive 20–4 victory over Helensvale.

✨ It’s a fantastic achievement to have three of our four teams qualify for Finals Days, with both the Under 12 and Under 14 Boys making the Championship Finals. This success is a real credit to the strength of our futsal program.

✨ The draw and dates for the finals will be released in the coming weeks, but rest assured – come October, our teams will be ready to go and aiming to bring home the silverware.

✨ Congratulations to all our students who took part. We are so very proud of your efforts, skills, and team spirit.  And a big shoutout to Hadi Ashnaei for his excellent coaching of our Futsal teams.

Our Year 5 and 6 girls showed incredible determination, teamwork, and team spirit at the Primary School’s Netball Cup on Monday. They gave their all in every match, learning from challenges and supporting each other every step of the way.

Their hard work paid off with each team earning a fantastic win in their final games, ending the day on a high and making our school proud!  Congratulations!!

Tyler W and Manvi K have both been successful in making the 13-14 years Pacific District Cricket team. They will trial for the South Coast team later in the month. We wish them both well.

Celebrating Natalie’s Irish Dancing Success! 

We are so proud of Natalie H, one of our talented Year 2 students, who is an accomplished Irish Dancer competing at the highest level with the McNeill Academy of Irish Dance under the guidance of her inspiring teacher and mentor, Clare McNeill-Arnall, here on the Gold Coast. 
Natalie trains with incredible dedication — 2 hours after school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and most Saturdays — to master her craft.

From Friday 8th to Sunday 10th August, Natalie competed in the Queensland State Irish Dancing Championships at the SunPAC Centre in Sunnybank — a major annual event where only the top 5 dancers in each age category qualify for the Irish Dance World Championships in Schaumburg, Illinois, USA in 2026.

We’re thrilled to share that Natalie placed 2nd in her age category out of 9 dancers! 
While she’s not yet old enough to compete at Worlds (you must be 10+), this achievement shows she’s well on her way to making that dream come true.
With her passion, skill, and commitment, we know Natalie’s future in Irish dance is looking brilliant.  Congratulations!

Families and Members of the Alberton Lutheran Parish gathered in our Bush Chapel on Sunday morning for Messy Church. The focus of our time together was ‘ Season of Creation’. What a wonderful opportunity for our community to experience God’s creation in our beautiful Bush Chapel setting.

➡️ Our last Messy Church for this term will be held on Sunday, 21st September at 9.30am at LORDS. All are welcome!

Confirmation Classes begin on Tuesday, 7th October at 4:15pm, meeting at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Woongoolba – all students from Year 5 and older are invited to join.

There will be 8 classes in total held every Tuesday afternoon at 4:15pm during Term 4, with the Rite of Confirmation celebrated during worship at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at 9:30 am on Sunday, November 30th, 2025.

Confirmation is a Rite in the Lutheran Church celebrating the culmination and preparation of young people for a public affirmation of faith. It is a time to learn about what God teaches us about faith, and also it is a time of preparation to receive the Lord’s Supper or some of you may have heard of this as Holy Communion. Confirmation is open to anyone who is interested in further study on the Christian faith and how it applies to everyday life.

"Write Like an Author" and "Draw Like an Artist" are school holiday programs for young writers and artists.

They will be held during the school holidays at HOTA Home of the Arts on the Gold Coast.

The writing camp starts on Tuesday, September 23rd, and runs until Thursday, September 25th.
This is a three-day camp for children aged 9 to 14.

On Friday, September 26th, there will be an 'Advanced Camp'. This is an extension workshop for older students, or anyone who has completed the three-day camp.

We will also hold a one-day junior workshop for children aged 7 to 10, on Monday, September 22nd.

Young writers will learn:
* How to come up with story ideas
* How to plan and outline a story
* How to come up with interesting, sympathetic characters
* The writing process, how to put it all down on paper

School Office

Our office hours are between 8.00am – 4.00pm, Monday to Friday with the exception of Public Holidays.

Tuckshop

Our Tuckshop on Wheels operates for morning tea and lunch on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Orders are to be placed online via Flexischools prior to 8.15 am each day. Students from Years 7 - 12 and staff may purchase over the counter with cash or eftpos at break times. We do not allow Junior School students to purchase items over the counter. All Junior School orders must be placed using Flexischools.

Reminder: No Nuts or Nut Products at School

A reminder to all families that our school is a nut-free environment to protect students with severe anaphylactic allergies. We ask that no nuts or nut-based products (including items like Nutella or peanut butter) be brought to school in lunchboxes, snacks, or for sharing during special events.

This applies to all year levels from Kindergarten to Year 12, and includes all school events, excursions, and activities.

Please note that while we aim to be nut-free, some pre-packaged items may contain traces of nuts as stated by manufacturers. We encourage parents to check labels carefully and choose safe alternatives.
