The LORDS Way of Thinking – I Can Be Creative, Critical and Curious

At LORDS, we believe that learning is more than remembering facts. It’s about how we think, how we question, and how we imagine. Over the coming weeks, as we focus on the LORDS Way of Thinking, we are reminded of the beautiful gift we have been given to be creative, critical, and curious.

Creativity reflects the image of the One who made us. The first thing we learn about God in the Bible is that God created light, land, creatures, colour, and possibility. And in doing so, He invites us to do the same: to build, design, imagine, write, question, explore, and dream.

Critical thinking reminds us to be thoughtful with our words, decisions, and ideas. It calls us to listen well, weigh up perspectives, and seek truth not just what is popular or easy.

Curiosity is where awe and learning begin. It’s the spark that says, “What if?” or “How come?” or “Could there be another way?” And when we’re curious, we stay open to others, to learning, and to God.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1

We are created by a creative God, who delights when we use our minds and hearts to explore His world.

Partnering Together to Support Strong School Attendance

At LORDS, we know that learning flourishes when students feel connected, supported, and present. One of the key ways we can help our young people thrive academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually is by working together to support strong and regular school attendance.

When students attend school consistently, they are more likely to stay engaged in learning, build friendships, and develop the confidence and routines that set them up for future success. But we also understand that life can be complex, and every family’s story is unique.

That’s why partnership is at the heart of how we approach attendance at LORDS. We’re here to support, encourage, and walk alongside families to help students feel a sense of belonging and purpose in their school journey.

Christmas in July Trivia Night – A Wonderful Celebration of Community!

What a fantastic night of fun, laughter, and connection we shared at our FOLS Christmas in July Trivia Night!

A huge thank you to our incredible FOLS team for organising such a joyful and well-run event. From the festive decorations to the creative trivia rounds and generous prize table, every detail reflected care and effort to bring our community together.

We’re also grateful to the fabulous Moyra Major for hosting the night with warmth, humour, and great energy. Thanks also to the Jacob’s Well Tavern for being such a welcoming venue and providing great food and hospitality. It was the perfect space to gather, connect, and make memories.

Events like this remind us that at the heart of our school is a strong and vibrant community. It’s about more than fundraising, it’s about coming together, supporting one another, and enjoying each other’s company as families, staff, and friends of LORDS.

Welcome to Week 4, Term 3 at LORDS!

This week we celebrate the LORDS Ways of Thinking with a focus on:
“I can be creative, critical, and curious.”

Our students are encouraged to think deeply, ask great questions, and imagine new possibilities, knowing that creativity is a reflection of the Creator who made us.

“In the beginning God created…” – Genesis 1:1

From the very start, God showed us the beauty and power of creativity. As we learn, wonder, and problem-solve this week, we are reminded that we are made in the image of a creative God.

Let’s keep thinking with purpose, curiosity, and imagination.

LORDS is already planning for staffing, resources and Year level structures for 2026.

If you plan to enrol a sibling or have family or friends looking for a place at LORDS in 2026, please submit an application as soon as possible. Our application process can be accessed via this link ENROL HERE.

If you know your child will not be attending LORDS in 2026, it would be of assistance if you could please notify our Registrar Leisa Martin in writing as soon as possible and with consideration of the enrolment contractual obligations of providing at least one term’s notice in writing. Should a term’s notice not be received, a term’s fees will be charged in lieu of notice.

This means for those students not returning in 2026, written notice should be received via email or letter no later than September 19, 2025.

LORDS last night at Hillcrest College for the Year 9 and 10 Reader’s Cup Challenge!

The motivation behind Reader’s Cup is to give the readers in our schools an opportunity to shine. 

Congratulations to our Year 10 Reader’s Cup Team for coming 1st place (out of 14 schools).  

This is an outstanding achievement, and we are so proud of Lucy, Kelsey, Millie, and Eleanor. Thanks also goes to Mrs Rebecca Ludcke for her ongoing support and mentoring of our students. Our Year 9 Team ( Graeme, Amy, Felicity, Lily & Annabelle) came 6th, which is also a terrific result. Our Year 10 Team will be heading to the State Finals in October. Well done, Team LORDS!

Congratulations to all of these students for their dedication, time, and effort! We are very proud of you!

On Thursday morning, we gave thanks for a very special group in our LORDS community — the first students to journey with us all the way from Kindy to Year 12 (Sophie, Ella, Joseph, and Katelyn), and those who joined in Prep and have been with us throughout their formal education to Year 12 (Mackenzie, Mia, Layla, Gemma, Jackson, and Sophia).

It was a joy to share memories, reflect on growth, and honour the trust placed in us by our foundation families. Their belief in our vision, right from the beginning, has shaped the heart of LORDS.

As we look back with gratitude and forward with hope, we hold these words close:
“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful.” – Hebrews 10:23

Thank you to these students, families, and staff for being part of the LORDS' story from the very beginning.

At LORDS, service isn’t just something we do; it’s who we are. Recently, our staff and senior students had the privilege of volunteering with Rosies - Friends On The Street, continuing an important partnership that reminds us of the heart of community.

Through simple acts of presence, shared conversations, and crossing boundaries of age, background, and experience, our students learn that every person holds innate dignity and that everyone’s story matters.

Thank you to Rosie’s for welcoming us into this space of compassion and connection. Our service-learning journey continues, grounded in respect, empathy, and the belief that we are all better when we walk alongside one another.

Our Japanese friends have been very busy at LORDS, enjoying their two weeks of their homestay by visiting classes, improving their English, and making plenty of new friends!

A snapshot of their first week involved:

• Making lamingtons, ANZAC biscuits, and Vegemite scrolls with Year 10 Hospitality,
• Game of Cricket on the Oval, guided by the Year 12 Sport and Rec class,
• Joined in a Samurai game with Year 8 Humanities, sharing their knowledge of the Japanese feudal system,
• Shared their opinions on ‘liveability’ with the Year 7 cohort as they worked on their Project Based Learning project,
• Constructed Aussie animal ornaments in our Technology Shed with Mr Thorpe,
• Had an excursion to Tropical Fruit World and the beach.

Their Host Families have also shown them an awesome Aussie welcome, spending the weekend visiting local sights such as Mt Tamborine and the Byron Bay Lighthouse, going on boat rides, meeting alpacas, horses, cows, and koalas, checking out the rides at the local theme parks, and feasting on BBQs, Vegemite, and Tim Tams

A snapshot of their second week involved:

• Learning about our local indigenous culture by participating in an Aboriginal Culture workshop
• Heading on an excursion to Brisbane City and Southbank
• Joining Year 8 English for Mingle Bingo
• Getting creative with the Year 8/9 Art class
• Playing games with our Prep students• Sharing learning with Year 6 and Year 5.

After a wonderful two-week visit, it was time to farewell our visiting friends from Japan! The LORDS community warmly welcomed the students and staff from Kokushikan High School again this year, ensuring their visit was a great success and the longstanding connection between our schools continues to prosper!

With many tears and promises to meet again, the students departed LORDS. This life-changing experience would not be possible without the generosity of our LORDS host families, and we extend a HUGE thank you to them for including these students in their family life!

We can’t wait to see the students again next month when the LORDS students visit Tokyo as part of the 2025 Japan Tour!

Year 10 History – Secrets of the City Excursion

As part of their Australian Conspiracies unit, Year 10 History students recently ventured into Brisbane to uncover layers of mystery woven through the city’s past. While exploring local urban legends—including rumours of hidden tunnels and the elusive Brisbane River Monster—students were also developing critical historical skills, using these stories as a springboard to consider how myths, conspiracies, and popular narratives evolve. 

The focus of the excursion was a dedicated research session at the State Library of Queensland, where students accessed primary and secondary sources to begin developing their independent essays. This experience deepened their understanding of how to evaluate the reliability of sources, consider differing perspectives, and construct evidence-based historical arguments.

We are excited for our upcoming Year 10-12 Student Retreat on 15th August.

As they explore the theme of Living as our Authentic Selves, students will have the chance to engage in a range of character and connection-building activities, times of reflection in response to content, and the opportunity to hear from a recent LORDS graduate about how they have wrestled with the theme in their own life.

Our Year 12 General English students had the incredible opportunity to experience Shakespeare's Macbeth come to life on stage at HOTA (Home of the Arts). As part of their preparation for the upcoming external assessment, students had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the play’s characters, themes, and dramatic techniques through a powerful live performance.

It was a valuable and engaging experience that brought the Bard’s work beyond the classroom and into a dynamic, theatrical setting. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the performance and appreciated the chance to see Shakespeare’s work brought to life!

As we move through a vibrant Term 3, it has been heartening to witness our students thriving across so many areas of school life, from literacy and learning to sport and leadership.

Book Week was a true highlight this fortnight! We were privileged to welcome Author Dee White, who inspired our students with stories of her writing journey and the creative process behind her books. The week was full of excitement and connection as students enjoyed special buddy reading sessions, taking turns to read aloud and share favourite stories across year levels. We also saw impressive entries in our Junior School Writing Competition, where students showcased their imagination and growing writing skills. The week concluded with a colourful and joy-filled Book Week Parade, where characters from all kinds of books came to life in classrooms and across the playground.

Last week also saw the celebration of student achievement at our Academic and Academic Effort Awards Assemblies. These gatherings are a wonderful opportunity to recognise students not only for strong academic results, but also for the commitment, persistence, and growth mindset they demonstrate in their learning. Congratulations to all award recipients, and thank you to our teachers and families for continuing to support and nurture this growth.

In the sporting arena, our Junior School students have once again done us proud. From strong teamwork and sportsmanship at the recent Futsal Tournament, to the energy and determination shown at the Pacific District Athletics, it’s been fantastic to see so many students participating and giving their best. Whether representing the school or striving for a personal best, our students continue to shine in all they do.

Finally, this week marked the beginning of our Year 6 to Year 7 Transition Morning Teas. Mrs Kinne and Miss Krenske joined small groups of Year 6 students in a relaxed and welcoming setting, helping them prepare for the next exciting stage in their learning journey. These informal chats help to build confidence and connection, setting the tone for a smooth transition into Middle School.

Year 2 Excursion: Emu in the Sky – Indigenous Perspectives in Space and Place

As part of our Project-Based Learning unit Emu in the Sky: Indigenous Perspectives in Space and Place, Year 2 students visited the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium and the Mount Coot-tha Botanic Gardens for a day of immersive, hands-on learning. At the planetarium, students watched the sky transform from day to night and explored the stars, planets, and Indigenous stories of the night sky—including the majestic Emu in the Sky.

At the gardens, we mapped out the peaceful Japanese Garden and sampled native honey, learning that Mount Coot-tha means “place of the honey bee” in the local Aboriginal language. The excursion was a powerful way to connect cultural stories with science, land, and sky.

Year 4 were fortunate to welcome a special guest speaker from OzHarvest Queensland, Australia’s leading food rescue organisation. The visit was part of our learning about food waste and sustainability, linking directly to our current unit, Feast.

Students listened attentively as the guest speaker explained how OzHarvest collects surplus food from businesses and delivers it to people in need, helping to reduce both hunger and food waste. The speaker also shared powerful stories about how OzHarvest feeds, educates, advocates, and innovates. This sparked curiosity and thoughtful discussion among students.

Year 4 students were eager to ask questions and learn more about how they, too, can make a difference in their communities by thinking carefully about the food they use and waste. It was an inspiring and meaningful session that connected real-world action with classroom learning.

A massive thank you to all students and families for supporting our ‘Book an Adventure’ activities last week!

Throughout the week, students had the opportunity to engage with author Dee White, and it was lovely to hear all about her writing adventures!

All students from Kindy - Year 12 were involved in our Whole School Read on Tuesday morning – it was wonderful to see the conversations and reading of books! Friday was a spectacular display of characters for our Book Fair Parade!

And a big special thank you to our wonderful Librarian, Mrs Rebecca Ludcke, for her tireless efforts in making everything come to life for Book Week! She amazes us every year!!! 

On Tuesday, 5th August, LORDS travelled to Bill Norris Oval in Beenleigh to take part in the South Queensland Primary All Schools Touch Football competition. Schools from across South Queensland came together for a great day of sport and competition.
LORDS was proudly represented by three teams:

• Year 3/4 Boys
• Year 5/6 Boys
• Year 5/6 Girls

On what turned out to be a very hot winter day, our students embraced the opportunity to learn more about the game of Touch Football. All teams showed tremendous improvement throughout the day, growing in confidence, teamwork, and understanding of the game.

It was a fantastic chance for many students to try a new sport, while also gaining valuable experience competing against schools where Touch Football is a major focus.

Well done to all students for their effort, enthusiasm, and team spirit!

Hanna R competed in the School Sports Australia Swimming Games on 31st July.
She represented the QLD team and competed in the 200m Breaststroke and came 4th.

On Tuesday, 9th of July, LORDS proudly participated in the South Queensland Champion of Champions Futsal Carnival held at Nissan Arena. This prestigious event brought together the top school futsal teams from across South East Queensland, with invitations extended only to teams who placed in the top 4 of their regional competitions.

LORDS was represented by both our Under 9 and Under 10 Boys teams.

The Under 9 Boys, made up largely of students new to futsal, put in a fantastic effort on the day. They kicked off with an impressive win in their opening match and showed great spirit throughout the carnival, narrowly going down in their remaining three games. Their commitment and positive attitude set a strong foundation for future success.

Our Under 10 Boys team faced strong competition but rose to the challenge spectacularly. They went undefeated in their group stage, winning all five matches. In the semi-final, they delivered a commanding 8–1 victory over St Andrews. The Grand Final against Somerset College was a tight contest early on, but LORDS displayed outstanding teamwork, skill, and determination to claim the title with a 7–2 win.

Becoming South Queensland Champions is an incredible achievement and a testament to the effort, team spirit, and talent of our boys. Well done to all involved!

U14 Boys - through to VETO Futsal Cup CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS!

Our Under 14 Boys have qualified for the VETO Futsal League Cup – Champion of Champions, finishing 2nd overall with just one loss across three gala days.

Needing three wins to qualify on the final day, the team delivered with three victories and a draw — a brilliant effort in our first year in the comp!

We are incredibly proud of their skill, grit, and teamwork, and wish them all the best for the finals in Term 4.

To our loyal supporters – riding the highs and lows of these days with their children, we are all grateful.

Well done, boys, and many thanks to all of the staff who have supported the team over the three days, especially Program Coordinator and Coach Hadi Ashnaei.

Week 5

The Arts department is planning for the Senior Arts Elective Evening where the Visual Art, Drama, and Music students will present their final assessment pieces. This event will take place at Highway Church on Thursday, 14th August from 6.15pm to 7.30pm.

Gold Coast Dance Eisteddfod

Averey W (Prep A) competed at the Gold Coast Eisteddfod last week, which is Australia’s largest youth performing arts event, with many competitors traveling from out of state to attend. Averey was named as one of the 3 youngest performers in the entire competition and represented herself and her dance school (Stage Door Academy) with great confidence and enthusiasm.

Averey placed 2nd overall for acrobatics in the 5 & under age group. She also challenged herself by competing in higher age divisions, receiving a Highly Commended in Tap (under 6) and placing 3rd overall in Musical Theatre (under 7). On her second day, Averey also placed 3rd in Musical Theatre in the 12 & under category with the song 'Naughty' from the musical Matilda.

During Averey's first competition of the year at Future Stars, she achieved multiple placings, including two firsts, a second, and was named Runner-Up Age Champion. She has also qualified for the National Championships later this year.

Silver Strings QUOTA Eisteddfod!
On Tuesday, 29 July, our Silver Strings Ensemble proudly represented LORDS at the QUOTA Eisteddfod in Beenleigh. The ensemble performed with remarkable enthusiasm, focus, and musicality, showcasing the many hours of dedication and rehearsal they had put into preparing for this event.

Their hard work was rewarded with a Highly Commended result, a testament to their commitment, teamwork, and passion for music. It was evident to all in attendance that the students performed not only with technical skill but with heart and spirit.

We are incredibly proud of every member of the Silver Strings Ensemble. Their achievement reflects their dedication and love for music. A big thank you also goes to our music staff and families who supported the students throughout their journey.

On Wednesday 30 July, our LORDS Choirs proudly took to the stage at the QUOTA Eisteddfod in Beenleigh, representing our school with great pride and professionalism. The Choirs delivered a beautiful and engaging performances that truly highlighted their vocal talent and dedication.

State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP)

During the recent school holidays, Aimee N (Year 7), Amy P (Year 9), Ava M (Year 7), and Riley W (Year 9) were honoured with selection to participate in the esteemed State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) at Griffith University.

This program provided an enriching experience, where students immersed themselves in a dynamic and intensive musical environment alongside talented peers from Brisbane and surrounding areas.

Over three days, the students dedicated themselves to learning ten challenging musical pieces, showcasing their skills by performing five of them in a special concert for family and friends.

Simone Geurts – Piano Tutor

Simone holds a Bachelor of Music Education and Diploma of Music (Piano). She has also undertaken Master of Music study through the University of QLD in Advanced Aural Studies and Choral Conducting. Simone has more than thirty years’ experience in performance music education and has previously been Director of Music of two large music programs.

She has also worked as a classroom music teacher, ensemble conductor, accompanist, entertainer, voice teacher, and has been involved in many musical productions. She currently works full time teaching piano and accompanying instrumental students between LORDS and The Southport School.

Play is such an important part of childhood – it supports creativity, builds friendships, encourages problem-solving, and helps children grow socially, emotionally, and physically.

Outside School Hours & Vacation Care

Before and After School Care is available on site at LORDS Monday to Friday excluding Public Holidays.

School Office

Our office hours are between 8.00am – 4.00pm, Monday to Friday with the exception of Public Holidays.

Tuckshop

Our Tuckshop on Wheels operates for morning tea and lunch on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Orders are to be placed online via Flexischools prior to 8.15 am each day. Students from Years 7 - 12 and staff may purchase over the counter with cash or eftpos at break times. We do not allow Junior School students to purchase items over the counter. All Junior School orders must be placed using Flexischools.

Reminder: No Nuts or Nut Products at School

A reminder to all families that our school is a nut-free environment to protect students with severe anaphylactic allergies. We ask that no nuts or nut-based products (including items like Nutella or peanut butter) be brought to school in lunchboxes, snacks, or for sharing during special events.

This applies to all year levels from Kindergarten to Year 12, and includes all school events, excursions, and activities.

Please note that while we aim to be nut-free, some pre-packaged items may contain traces of nuts as stated by manufacturers. We encourage parents to check labels carefully and choose safe alternatives.
