At LORDS, we believe that education is not just something that happens in classrooms it grows in community. When families, staff, and students come together, we create something truly special: a place where young people feel seen, supported, and inspired.

ALWS WALK MY WAY

We’re also grateful for the support shown for the ALWS Walk My Way event in Brisbane. Over 65 members of the LORDS community walked together to raise awareness and funds to help refugee children access education. We raised over $3,000 for the important work of ALWS around the world. A special thank you to Rebecca Ludcke, Emma Lawrence, and Lyndsay Voorhoeve for leading our team and inspiring others to walk with purpose.

To our secondary school families, thank you for connecting during our recent parent/teacher/student conferences. These conversations matter. If you were unable to attend, we encourage you to reach out. Connection doesn’t just happen in scheduled moments — it happens whenever we make time for one another.

Welcome to Week 4 at LORDS!

This week we focus on the LORDS Way of Thinking — “I can be critical.”

At LORDS, being critical means thinking carefully, asking questions, and reflecting deeply. It’s about using our minds wisely to make thoughtful choices, solve problems, and grow in understanding with kindness and purpose.

The Bible reminds us in Proverbs 2:2-3:
“Turn your ear to wisdom and apply your heart to understanding.”
God invites us to seek truth and use our thinking as a gift.

Our Year 10 Legal Studies students stepped out of the classroom and into the heart of Queensland’s legal system for an exciting and enriching excursion to Brisbane.

We began the day at the Queensland Police Museum, where students explored how policing has evolved over time — from early colonial methods to modern investigative techniques. One of the highlights was engaging with an augmented reality crime scene, where the girls collected and analysed forensic evidence just like real-life detectives. This interactive experience brought their current unit on criminal law and forensics to life in a powerful and memorable way.

In the afternoon, we visited both the District and Supreme Courts, where students had the rare opportunity to observe several criminal trials in session. They witnessed courtroom procedures, listened to legal arguments, and even observed the process of jury empanelment. This gave them invaluable insight into how juries are selected and how real trials unfold beyond the textbook.

This excursion was not only engaging but also very beneficial for the upcoming assessment. The courtroom experiences, in particular, will be instrumental in helping students prepare for their analytical essay, where they will evaluate the effectiveness of the jury system in delivering just outcomes in criminal trials.

A huge thank you to the Qld Police Museum and Brisbane Law Courts; it was a fantastic opportunity for our students to connect their classroom learning with the real-world workings of the legal system.

Our 1st Interhouse Chess Competition was nothing short of a battlefield of minds! Over two intense days, the best players from each house went head-to-head in a nail-biting tournament full of strategy, focus, and determination.

The final match had everyone on edge as Joseph S (Logan) faced off against Tristan M (Pimpama). With impressive preparation and composure under pressure, Joseph claimed victory, securing the win for Logan!

Albert – 20 points

These points go towards the Annual House Trophy, and every move made a difference!

One of our science ambassadors, Isabella J, recently attended workshops at QUT. Our Head of Science, Michelle Thomas, asked Isabella about her experiences.

What do you enjoy about science?

I enjoy science because it helps me make sense of the world around me. There is always something new to learn or discover, and I love how each new piece of knowledge gives insight into different aspects of our environment.

What motivates you to be a Science Ambassador for our school community?

I want to be a science ambassador for our school community because I would love to be part of a group that makes science more exciting and accessible for everyone in the school. I understand that not everyone finds science easy or enjoyable at first, but I believe that with the right approach, we can change that. I also have a strong interest in biology and chemistry.

You recently attended the QUT Engineering Experience Day. Can you tell us a little about your experience?

The QUT Engineering Experience Day provided great insight into the various pathways within the engineering field. We participated in two workshops where I experienced both chemical and civil engineering. In the chemical engineering workshop, we solved problems related to gas transportation, and in the civil engineering workshop, we built a wall out of sugar cubes that had to support the weight of sand.

If you could give one piece of advice to younger students about studying Senior Science, what would it be?

My advice would be to not be afraid to ask questions and make mistakes. Senior School Science can seem challenging at first, but it is all part of the learning process. The more curious you are, the easier it becomes to understand. Try to grasp the concepts instead of just memorizing them; it will make your studies much easier, trust me. As part of our Religion and Ethics program, our Year 11 students recently visited TriCare Pimpama, embodying the LORDS Way of empathy and collaboration.

During their visit, students connected with residents through engaging board games and creative craft activities. In celebration of Mother's Day, our thoughtful students also prepared special gifts to be delivered to the residents on Sunday, adding an extra touch of love and appreciation.

We are blessed by our continuing partnership with TriCare Pimpama. We are incredibly proud of our students for their kindness and dedication to making a positive impact in our community. Keep shining, Year 11!

As part of the Year 10 Religion and Ethics program, our students had the privilege of experiencing a real-life Human Library event. With the support of many guests from our local community, our students had the opportunity to learn the stories, ask questions, and engage with the many different lives our guests have led.

A big thank you to Mrs Ludcke for organising all our guests. It was a wonderful experience for everyone involved.

Information for Parents: Social Media Use

As part of our ongoing partnership with families, we’d like to share some friendly guidance around social media use, particularly Snapchat, which is becoming increasingly popular among students. We understand the digital world is a big part of our children’s lives, and we’re here to support you in navigating it together.

As a school community, we are guided by the LORDS Ways of Thinking, Learning, and Being, and this year we are inspired by our theme, “For a better tomorrow.” These guiding principles shape how we learn, grow, and connect with others—both in person and online. By supporting students to use social media respectfully and responsibly, we help them live out these values and contribute to creating a better tomorrow. One of the simplest and most powerful ways to do this is by encouraging them to be kind online.

Why we’re sharing this:

1. Age Appropriateness: Most social media platforms, including Snapchat, Discord, What’s App, Instagram, and TikTok, require users to be at least 13 years old. This is to protect younger children from exposure to content and interactions that may not be age appropriate. As of December 2025, the mandatory minimum age will be raised to 16 years.
2. Privacy and Safety: Snapchat's design, which allows photos and messages to disappear quickly, can create a false sense of security. This feature can be misused for sending inappropriate content or engaging in unkind behavior without accountability. Additionally, children may inadvertently share personal information or interact with strangers.
3. Peer Relationships and Mental Health: There has been a rise in social issues, including exclusion, name-calling, and misunderstandings, often stemming from interactions on these platforms. These issues frequently carry over into the classroom, affecting students' focus, friendships, and emotional well-being.
4. Digital Footprint: Even though content on apps like Snapchat disappears, it can still be captured and shared. Once something is posted online, it is nearly impossible to erase entirely. This can have long-term consequences for a child's reputation and safety.

Ways We Can Support Together:

• Stay Curious and Informed: Ask your child what apps they use and explore them together. A great starting point is the eSafety Commission website, which provides current information and advice for parents.
• Set Gentle Boundaries: Talk about when and where it’s okay to use devices, and which apps are appropriate.
• Keep the Conversation Going: Create a safe space for your child to share their online experiences with you.
• Model Positive Use: Children learn a lot from observing how adults use technology.
• Explore Parental Tools: There are great settings and tools available to help you monitor and guide online activity. The eSafety Guide can help you understand different apps and how to support safe use.

Encouraging our students to show Respect online, be Determined to make safe choices, and act with Love and Service toward others helps reinforce the LORDS Ways in all areas of their lives—including the digital world. Above all, we remind them to always be kind online.

All aboard THE TIME MACHINE Junior School Musical!

Join the marvelously eccentric Professor and his team of travelers as they journey backwards and forwards through time.

In the past, they encounter a pair of rapping dinosaurs, play musical chairs with the Knights of the Round Table, and perform an unexpected line dance with Julius Caesar. They nearly alter the course of history when they land on Amelia Earhart’s runway and interrupt Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the moon!

Their hilarious adventures continue until they find themselves a hundred years into the future, where they are confronted with an Earth deeply affected by climate change. After an entertaining exchange with two future humans, they realize that we must change how we live today to protect tomorrow.

THE TIME MACHINE Musical shows that throughout history, dreams, creativity, and imagination have driven progress and inspired change. From ancient legends to modern achievements, these elements remind us of the boundless potential within us to dream, create, and shape a brighter future. By harnessing these qualities, we can address today’s challenges and build a sustainable world that reflects our highest aspirations.

In Prep, we’ve been buzzing with excitement as we learn all about bees! On Thursday, 8th May 8th our students enjoyed a special visit from Steph at Urban Bee. Steph shared her fascinating knowledge about bees and helped us understand the vital role pollination plays in supporting our environment.

The highlight of the day was tasting fresh honeycomb — it was absolutely delicious! Students also had the opportunity to get hands-on by making seedballs to take home and plant in their gardens, helping to create more bee-friendly spaces.

Our STEM learners have gotten off to a great start this term!

Year 2 Students were excited to visit Woolworths last week to explore how digital technologies are utilised in everyday life. I would like to thank the management and staff of the Ormeau store for facilitating this wonderful learning opportunity.

Year 3 is embarking upon the exciting challenge of designing and creating a mask to best represent their chosen Australian animal.

Year 4 students this term are learning about wet weather clothing as part of their Project Based Learning unit. In STEM, they carried out experiments to effectively measure absorbency and warmth, with the view to choosing effective materials to dress a hiker facing extreme weather conditions.

Year 5 is in the process of researching and planning to create a sensory toy that could aid students relax, focus, and feel calm.

Year 6 students demonstrated their knowledge of chemical reactions by making their own ‘slime’ recipe.

Our students have a lot of fun in STEM, but they also learn so much in every lesson!

Our Year 4 students set off on an exciting overnight camp to Tyalgum Ridge Retreat.

Across two action-packed days, students embraced a wide range of activities, including high and low ropes, flying fox, archery, animal feeding, group initiatives, and camp skill sessions.

The experience encouraged students to step outside their comfort zones, develop resilience, and strengthen their teamwork and problem-solving abilities. It was a wonderful opportunity for personal growth and building lasting memories with classmates.

Futsal Update – Gala Day 2

Our LORDS 14's Boys Futsal team had another fantastic showing at Gala Day 2 held at Coomera Sports Centre last Friday. With 3 games played, we walked away undefeated—3 wins, 0 draws, and 0 losses. The team netted an impressive 26 goals while only conceding 5!

More importantly, the day was a true showcase of our team values. The players displayed incredible teamwork, supported one another on and off the court, and maintained high intensity from start to finish. A proud moment for our school and a great step forward in our futsal journey.

LORDS Futsal Teams Shine at Gold Coast Titles!

LORDS proudly sent four teams to compete in the Gold Coast Futsal Titles at the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre. For many students, this was their first taste of a School Futsal Competition, and it marked the beginning of the 2025 Futsal season.

Each team played between three and six games throughout the day, showcasing determination, skill, and teamwork. The Under 8s grew stronger with each match and capped off the day by giving the eventual champions a serious challenge. The Under 11s played with incredible heart, putting in some outstanding performances.

Both the Under 9 and Under 10 teams progressed to the semi-finals—a fantastic achievement. The 9s fought hard but were narrowly defeated 4-2, while the 10s were edged out 3-2 in the final minutes of a tightly contested match.

Special thanks go to Coach Hadi, whose leadership and coaching philosophy have played a key role in the development and success of the Futsal Program this year. These results are a testament to the hard work and commitment of both players and the coach.

On Monday, 12th May, LORDS participated in the 2025 SLAPS Cross Country (Inter Lutheran Cross Country) at Redeemer, and it was an incredible day of competition and achievement!

LORDS emerged victorious, winning the Division 2 Overall Percentage Shield, marking a fantastic accomplishment for the team.

The 10-year boys’ team clinched the Division 2 Champions title, and the 11/12 girls team also claimed the Division 2 Champions spot, showing strong performances across the board.

Several standout performances truly made the day memorable:

• The 11/12 year mixed relay team (Athena, Chloe, Eli, and Daly) came in a remarkable 2nd place.
• Athena and Charlie both secured 3rd-place finishes in their respective age groups.
• Abbygaile, Heath, Bentley, Hudson, Chloe, and Ellie all placed in the Top 10 of their races, contributing to the outstanding overall result.

Despite the challenges of a rainy day and a muddy track, every student gave their best effort and displayed exceptional sportsmanship throughout the event. This year’s performance marked the best result ever for a LORDS team at the SLAPS Cross Country, making it a day to remember! Congratulations to all the athletes for their hard work and dedication.

Congratulations to Aaleiya & Ellie, who will represent Pacific District at the South Coast Trialson Wednesday, 21st May in the under 12s Girls' Soccer Team.Well done, we are so proud of you!

Our Year 9 student, Curtis L, continues to achieve great results in Karate. Curtis has won 2 Gold Medals at the National Karate Competition in March. On 3rd May, he also won 3 Gold Medals at the Wide Bay Titles, & a special award, “Man of Spirit”.Curtis will compete again at the Gold Coast Titles at the end of this month, followed by the QLD Titles in August. Curtis truly enjoys his training, committing to five days a week for a total of 15 hours. Congratulations Curtis! We are very proud of you.

On Monday 12th May, our Strings students visited Coomera Special School, where they had the wonderful opportunity to perform and connect with the students. Their performance filled the hall with joy and drew a full house surpassing attendance from previous visits. The Performing Arts staff are immensely proud of our students for their respectful, enthusiastic engagement throughout the visit.

Rehearsals for this year’s Junior School musical are officially underway, and there’s a buzz of excitement in the air! Our young performers have been hard at work learning their lines, perfecting their choreography, and fine-tuning their songs. The enthusiasm is contagious as students eagerly dive into their roles and begin to bring the story to life.

With each rehearsal, the energy and confidence on stage continue to grow. It’s wonderful to see students supporting one another, discovering their talents, and gaining valuable experience in teamwork and self-expression.

Douglas McRae – Vocal Music Tutor

Douglas is an international artist who has performed throughout Australia and the world, including a long career performing with Opera Australia at the Sydney Opera House, and as a cast member of the International Touring Company of The Phantom of the Opera. Now based in Brisbane, he is excited to pass on his experience to his students, where he hopes he can bring out the best in what they have to offer.

Highly proficient at the piano, he is also a regular accompanist and musical theatre coach.

Douglas’ voice and piano teaching experience began in 2000, teaching both privately and at schools all over Australia, including Marist College Ashgrove, West Moreton Anglican College, Forrestville Montessori School (NSW), and St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School (WA). Douglas has obtained both a Bachelor of Music and a Diploma of Music from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).

The Alberton Lutheran Parish is excited to host their first Messy Church in 2025 here at LORDS on Sunday, 18th May. Messy Church is a family-focused model of church that uses hands-on activities to help people explore some of the most important questions in life and deepen their relationship with God.

The theme for May is “You’re Invited to the Party!” and will feature activities such as photo booth dress-ups, biscuit decorating, party games, and more. Messy Church runs from 9:30am and will conclude by 11am at the latest. (Children must be accompanied by an adult for the whole session.)

For some family fun and a fresh way of experiencing church, join us on Sunday 18th May hosted here at the LORDS Learning Hub (Admin Building), and surrounds. The event will finish with a light meal consisting of fruit & veg, biscuits, and sausage sizzle. There is no cost! However, donations are welcome to support the wonderful ministry and mission that happens through the Alberton Lutheran Parish. We can’t wait to see you there!

Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation with our car parks at LORDS.
We are aware of ongoing concerns regarding the car parks and assure you that we are taking these matters seriously. Recently, several issues have been brought to our attention, including unsafe driving practices and difficulties in finding suitable parking.

The safety of our community is our top priority. We kindly remind all users of the car park to drive cautiously, adhere to speed limits (<40km/hr), follow signage (give way and stop signs), and staff directions at all times. In particular, we ask that cars are not double-parked, that drop-off zones are used only for quick transitions, and that pedestrians and buses are given right of way. 

Please do not park in front of the bins outside the Maintenance Office or block the Maintenance vehicles, which are usually parked near their office.

If there is an incident, such as an accident involving vehicles/pedestrians, please report immediately to the Administration Office or Student Services, and help will be provided.

If you are involved in a minor incident, such as a car door hitting another car, please wait for the owner of the other vehicle or leave a note for them, as you would do in any public car park.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work toward a safer car park environment for everyone.

Our Japanese friends from Kokushikan High School are very excited to join LORDS again this year for their homestay and we are now recruiting host families to make their time in Australia very special!

Would your family be willing to host a student and share your family lifestyle with them?

The Japanese students arrive on Monday, 21st July, and leave Sunday, 3rd August. They are aged between 14 and 17 years old and will attend classes at LORDS during their stay, as well as sightseeing in Brisbane city and on the Gold Coast.

As a host family, you will be asked to provide meals, transport to and from school, and a room for your homestay student. Members of your household must also apply for a Blue Card, if they are over 18 years old. (It is free, and LORDS can help with the process.)

You will receive a payment of $780 from International Student Services to assist with the cost of hosting a student.

Our Tuckshop on Wheels operates for morning tea and lunch on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Orders are to be placed online via Flexischools prior to 8.15 am each day. Students from Years 7 - 12 and staff may purchase over the counter with cash or eftpos at break times. We do not allow Junior School students to purchase items over the counter. All Junior School orders must be placed using Flexischools.
