Students from the Junior and Secondary Schools gathered for our ANZAC Day Services last week. Thanks to student and staff representatives, along with Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Smith (retired) President of Beenleigh RSL, for sharing the ANZAC story with us all.

Thanks to those LORDS Families who represented our community in the wet and rainy weather at the ANZAC Dawn service at Woongoolba. May we continue to remember those who have sacrificed so much and pray for peace in our world. Lest We Forget.

ICAS Testing is offered to students in Years 3 to 12. This is held in August, from 4th to 29th.

This is not compulsory testing, but is rather something that students can choose to do.

WALK MY WAY 2025

We are putting together a team to participate in the ALWS Walk My Way in Brisbane on Saturday 10th May, 2025. Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) is the overseas aid and development agency of the Lutheran Church of Australia and New Zealand.

Join us for a 3km or 12.5km walk along the iconic Brisbane River as we step out to support children to step up.

Celebrating 75 years by supporting 75,000 children

When ALWS began in 1950, it was so generous Australians could walk alongside people in need… to bring care and love to those overlooked and forgotten by the world.

In 2025, we want to celebrate our 75th Anniversary by supporting 75,000 children with the essentials for a happy, healthy life – food, school, and safety.
We need your help to bring care and love to these children. You can help to make sure they have nutritious food to grow up strong, schooling so they are free to flourish, and safety growing up in families that are independent and hopeful for the future.

We hope you will join us on this walk. Junior School children must walk with an adult/family, and Secondary students may walk alone if they choose, but still be part of our team with staff and other families.

For over a decade, LORDS has been proud to partner with Rosies - Friends On The Street.

As part of this ongoing relationship, our Year 11 students and staff regularly volunteer with Rosie’s outreach program, offering connection, compassion, and conversation to those doing it tough. Last week, our current Year 11 students continued this important LORDS tradition.

Through this experience, students deepen their understanding of service learning — not as a task to complete, but as a way of being. They explore the power of story, the innate dignity of every person, and what it means to come as a guest, to be present, and to cross boundaries with empathy and respect.

Thank you to Rosie’s for continuing to walk alongside us in this meaningful work.

Our Year 8 Humanities students recently participated in an engaging incursion delivered by Emma from ALWS focusing on the global issue of refugees.

A highlight of the session was an interactive simulation where students selected items they would take if forced to flee their homes, prompting empathy and deeper reflection.

The presentation encouraged students to consider why people leave their countries and to gain insight into the often dangerous and uncertain journeys refugees undertake in search of safety, prompting them to reflect upon the innate dignity of those who leave their homes behind.

Ms Hoff visited our Year 7 classes who were working with their Year 12 buddies to set goals based on The LORDS Ways for the term.

It was terrific to see students in action identifying which LORDS Ways they were going to focus on and what it would look like in action.

Thanks to Year 7 Pastoral Care Assistant, Mrs Jenny Van Engelen, and our Year 7 and Year 12 Pastoral care teachers for their planning and support of this session.

In the last week of Term 1, Year 9 students demonstrated the LORDS way of 'I can be curious.' They ventured out of the laboratory between rain showers to participate in an outdoor investigation activity. They worked together to measure the speed of sound on our school grounds. Students observed and recorded the amount of time it took for a loud sound to travel 100m. They used a trundle wheel and large wooden clapboards, which were kindly custom-made by our facilities department. This allowed students to generate a visual movement that could be observed from a distance alongside an audible sound. After multiple trials and calculations, students determined the speed of sound within 10% of the known value. This formed part of their Physics unit, in which they studied the characteristics of sound and light waves.

Our Year 12 students enjoyed a well-deserved break with a delicious breakfast of waffles and ice cream! 

As they head into a particularly busy assessment period, it was wonderful to see them take time to relax, recharge, and connect with each other. We are so proud of their hard work and wish them all the best for the weeks ahead!

Our Year 11 student, Mirabella B, had a great time during the school holidays at the Translational Research Institute part of the SPARQ-Ed immersion program.

We received this update from the Institute:

"The students have impressed us with their diligence in the laboratory, willingness to collaborate and to think critically. They have completed the laboratory portion of the program including DNA extraction, spectroscopy to quantify DNA extracted, PCR, and gel electrophoresis of PCR products.

They have also completed the bioinformatics on gene sequences and have begun to plan their presentation. They will continue to work on their presentation before touring TRI and participating in a UQ Future Students seminar."

The Year 3 students and adults had a fantastic time on their excursion to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. In our PBL unit – Caretakers of Creation, the students have been exploring how God gives us the responsibility to be caretakers of creation and invites us to join him in caring for the survival of our world. The students are beginning the ‘Challenge’ phase of the unit and are visiting Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary to explore how they aim to protect animals to survive and how they educate the community about them.

Our day went so fast. Some of our students have shared their highlights of the day:

Our students will be creating a LORDS Sanctuary for our Junior School Showcase. We invite you to come and experience it.

As we move through a busy and exciting term, I continue to be impressed by the enthusiasm and engagement of our students across all areas of school life. Our staff and students are embracing the LORDS WAYS, with a particular focus on independence. This is evident in the way students are coming to class prepared, taking responsibility for their learning, and applying a growth mindset to overcome challenges and reach their goals.

Congratulations to our Junior School Cross Country team for their excellent results at the Beenleigh Zone Cross Country Carnival. Their determination, teamwork and sportsmanship were truly commendable. A special thank you to Mr Steinhardt for his leadership and to the staff who supported the team so capably on the day.

Last week, we gathered as a school community to honour ANZAC Day. Our student leaders led a respectful and thoughtful service, demonstrating great confidence and maturity. We were privileged to have Mr Smith speak to our students about the significance of ANZAC Day and the contributions of Australian soldiers in all conflicts. His words added depth and meaning to the occasion, and we thank him sincerely for his involvement.

Our musical rehearsals are well underway, and it's been a delight to see the students’ hard work and talent coming together. Tickets for the production are now on sale—we look forward to sharing this special event with you all very soon.

The excitement of excursions has been a highlight over the past few weeks. Year 5 had a fantastic experience stepping back in time during their Gold Rush excursion, while Year 3 thoroughly enjoyed exploring native wildlife at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. Our Year 2 students took part in a STEM-focused visit to Woolworths, where they explored the technology used behind the scenes in a modern supermarket—an engaging and eye-opening experience.

We’re also thrilled to see the new Year 5 and 6 playground taking shape! The students have been watching its progress with eager anticipation, and we’re all looking forward to its official opening later this term.

Finally, we are excited to invite our mothers, grandmothers, aunties and special friends to join us on Friday 9th May for a classroom visit and morning tea to celebrate Mother’s Day. This is always a much-loved tradition and a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the important women in our students’ lives.

Our Year 5 students, recently had a visit from Emma, who works for ALWS (Australian Lutheran World Service). Emma spoke to the classes about fairness, human rights, and stories from people in poverty and their struggles to achieve basic needs. She gave the students some thought provoking questions such as, ‘What can we do to help those who don’t have access to the same things we do?’ and ‘What would it be like to have a disability in a country where differences are not as accepted as they are here in Australia?’

Thank you, Emma and ALWS, for adding a deeper understanding to our Project-Based Learning/ Service Learning unit about being Uniquely Abled.

Their hilarious adventures continue until they find themselves a hundred years into the future, where they are confronted with an Earth deeply affected by climate change. After an entertaining exchange with two future humans, they realize that we must change how we live today to protect tomorrow.

LORDS Shines at Beenleigh Zone Cross Country Carnival!

A team of 30 enthusiastic LORDS students from Years 4 to 6 represented the school at the 2025 Beenleigh Zone Cross Country Carnival at Rivermount College. These students were selected based on their performance and times at the LORDS School Cross Country Carnival.

Competing against 26 other schools in the area, LORDS students showcased incredible determination and sportsmanship.

We proudly announce that six students have qualified to represent LORDS at the Pacific District Carnival, which will also be held at Rivermount on Wednesday, 14th May.

Outstanding individual performances included:
• Athena, who took out 1st place in the 12-year girls division.
• Ellie, who secured 2nd place in the 11-year girls division.
• An additional eight students placed in the top 25 in their respective age groups—an exceptional feat given that each race had over 100 competitors.

Team success was also a highlight of the day:
• The 11-year girls, 12-year girls, and 12-year boys all finished 2nd in their relay events, a remarkable result in races featuring 26 schools.

To top off a fantastic day, LORDS was awarded the E Division School Trophy, recognising us as the overall champion school in our division based on enrolment size.

This event was a wonderful celebration of dedication, training, and team spirit. Congratulations to all our runners—we are incredibly proud of your achievements!

Ciaran F competed in the South Coast Regional trials at Runaway Bay. He has won a place in the South Coast Regional Team to compete in the QLD School Sport 11-12 Years Boys Rugby League State Championships in June/July 2025.

We are thrilled that the Strings program will be starting up for Term 2! After a short break, we’re excited to see the students back and ready to pick up their instruments again. The first lesson of the term will take place in Week 3, where students will begin working on new skills, repertoire, and technique. We look forward to seeing their progress and enthusiasm as they dive into their music-making this term. Stay tuned for more updates as we embark on this exciting musical journey together!

Starting in Week 3, we will be combining the Junior and Senior Concert Bands into one unified ensemble. This new structure will allow students of varying skill levels to collaborate, learn from one another, and create a more vibrant and cohesive musical experience. Rehearsals for the combined ensemble will now be held on Wednesday mornings from 7.45am to 8.55am.

We believe this change will provide a valuable opportunity for students to grow musically, challenge themselves, and contribute to a stronger, more dynamic group sound. By bringing together the talents and energy of both bands, we aim to cultivate an inclusive and inspiring environment that benefits every student. Rowan Bowyer – Drum and Percussion Music Tutor

At 24 years old, Rowan has been mastering the drums for 18 years and has five years of teaching experience under his belt. Rowan completed his Bachelor of Music (Popular Music) at the Queensland Conservatorium in 2021, where he was able to refine his performance ability across many genres. His passion for drumming extends beyond the classroom as he actively contributes to the Australian music scene, most notably touring across the country with his band “Mid Drift”.

One of his biggest performances was during the 2020 AFL Grand Final halftime show, where he was a leader of the mass drumline that featured alongside Sheppard at the Gabba. Beyond stadium spectacles, Rowan has been heavily involved in Drumline's that have won national awards and performed both through streets and on stages. Some examples include the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols at Brisbane’s Riverstage and the Queen Street Christmas Parades for many years.

Rowan’s musical versatility also shines through his involvement in several theatrical productions, where he's provided the rhythmic backbone for beloved shows like "Legally Blonde," "Mary Poppins," and "The Addams Family."

Whether teaching aspiring drummers, performing on stages across the country, or adding depth to theatrical performances, Rowan provides a breadth of knowledge on drumming that he is excited to pass on to his students in every way he can.

Mother's Day is fast approaching, and we have our annual event planned for next Friday 9th May. Junior School classrooms will be open to visit from 8.30am. Then at 9.00am Friends of LORDS will serve a delicious Morning Tea. Black Sheep will be here with complimentary drinks - please get your coupon from our lovely FOLS ladies when you arrive.

(Please note that we cannot open Secondary School classrooms this year, however, you are still invited to join in the Morning Tea at 9:00am).

Members of the LORDS Council and Parish Leadership welcomed Pastor Mark Gierus, as he was installed as the new Pastor of Alberton Lutheran Parish.

As part of his role, Pastor Mark will be working at LORDS two days per week. We welcome him into our community and wish God’s richest blessings as he serves the parish and school.

The Alberton Lutheran Parish is excited to host their first Messy Church in 2025 here at LORDS on Sunday 18th May. Messy Church is a family-focused model of church that uses hands-on activities to help people explore some of the most important questions in life and deepen their relationship with God.

The theme for May is “You’re Invited to the Party!” and will feature activities such as photo booth dress-ups, biscuit decorating, party games, and more. Messy Church runs from 9:30am and will conclude by 11am at the latest.

For some family fun and a fresh way of experiencing church, join us on Sunday 18th May hosted here at the LORDS Learning Hub (Admin Building), and surrounds. The event will finish with a light meal consisting of fruit & veg, biscuits, and sausage sizzle. There is no cost! However, donations are welcome to support the wonderful ministry and mission which happens through the Alberton Lutheran Parish. We can’t wait to see you there!

Our Japanese friends from Kokushikan High School are very excited to join LORDS again this year for their homestay and we are now recruiting host families to make their time in Australia very special!

Would your family be willing to host a student and share your family lifestyle with them?

The Japanese students arrive on Monday, 21st July, and leave Sunday, 3rd August. They are aged between 14 and 17 years old and will attend classes at LORDS during their stay, as well as sightseeing in Brisbane city and on the Gold Coast.

As a host family, you will be asked to provide meals, transport to and from school, and a room for your homestay student. Members of your household must also apply for a Blue Card, if they are over 18 years old. (It is free, and LORDS can help with the process.)

You will receive a payment of $780 from International Student Services to assist with the cost of hosting a student.
